A therapeutic massage is the umbrella term that includes medical, sports, deep tissue and other modalities or methods. Each of those modalities has a specific goal and method. What you want/need can be determined upon arrival. While a therapeutic massage can be relaxing, the intent is usually to resolve a problem or issue that the individual is dealing with. One or more of the following therapies may be used during a single session. Common problems that can be addressed with therapeutic massage are Frozen Shoulder, Tight/Stiff Neck, Hip Pain, Sciatica, Low Back Pain, Tendonitis, Knee Pain. Many other common issue can also be helped.
Medical Massage: Focuses on a specific issue. Whether it is low back pain, neck pain, or joint pain. Areas both affected and related to are worked with massage, stretching, and other means to achieve relief. This is not typically going to be a full body massage.
Sports Massage: Works the muscle groups as a whole and usually incorporates a fair amount of stretching. Can be done as a full body or can focus on just upper or lower body. Hands, feet and neck/head are not usually included unless request.
Deep Tissue: Can be full body or focused on just one or a few areas. In either case, deep pressure is used to reach the underlying layers of muscle. Pressure can be adjusted to the individual's desire. A deep tissue massage doesn't necessarily mean that it is going to be painful. In fact many clients fall asleep.
Myofascial Release: Deep pressure glides with little to no lubricant creating a friction that releases the underlying fascia from the muscle tissue. This is typically used in conjunction with NMT.
NMT: Neuromuscular Therapy also referred to as trigger point therapy. A method used to get the nervous system to communicate with the muscles differently to allow the hypertonic muscle to relax.
Afterwards: Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Drink plenty of water as massage can flush your system and dehydrate you. For 1-3 days afterwards, you may experience some soreness in the areas that were tight. This is due to the muscles being strained and finally being released. The circulation returns to normal and the nervous system is functioning normally resulting in heightened sensitivity. This is normal and should only last for a few days.
